Tortonne sits placidly in a clearing, munching away at a tree. He hears rustling not far away and cranes his neck to look at the source. It’s a Malua making its way through the forest. The tortoise keeps an eye on the lizard and takes another bite from the tree like a human would a stick of celery. The iguana glances at the heavily armored creature and decides take a cue from it and eat some of the surrounding foliage instead of picking a fight.
Tortonne chews up the last of the tree before reaching down and pulling another one up. As he takes the first bite, the Malua suddenly seems to become uneasy. It looks around before scurrying away in a hurry. The creature’s behavior does not escape Tortonne’s attention, but the enormous tortoise simply continues chewing on the tree. Before long, though, he hears more rustling, this time from behind. Assuming it’s the Malua again, Tortonne pays it no mind. However, when a loud growl comes from the direction, he stops chewing and starts to turn his head. He doesn’t even get to see what it is before something smashes into his back and sends him sprawling to the ground.
Letting out an exasperated grunt, Tortonne plants his hands on the ground and pushes himself up. He gets to his feet and turns around, finally seeing his attacker. The Berzurkir rears up onto its hind legs, showing off a formidable stature. The mammal roars, only to be cut off by Tortonne’s armored forearm smashing into the side of its face. It’s knocked off balance by the blow, forcing it to fall onto all fours. The giant bear snarls and surges forward, slamming into Tortonne and sinking its saber fangs into his thigh. The giant chelonian grunts and slams his fists into the bear’s back, only to immediately recoil as the quills on its back turn his hands to pincushions.
Now truly angered, Tortonne slams his hands against the Berzurkir’s shoulders, driving his dagger-like claws deep into its flesh. The bear roars in pain, releasing Tortonne’s leg. He removes his claws from the mammal, allowing it to back away. It is undeterred, though, and stands on its hind legs again before swiping Tortonne’s face. With four bloody gashes now on the side of his face, the tortoise roars and lunges at the bear, clamping down on its shoulder with his serrated beak. The Berzurkir roars in pain again as the beak easily slices through its skin and sinks into its flesh. He jerks his head back, slicing the bear’s shoulder to ribbons and eliciting another cry from it.
With a roar of fury, Tortonne slams his hands against the bear’s sides, burying his claws in its flesh again. Then, in a show of strength, he lifts the mammal up and throws it to the ground. The creature groans and slowly crawls to its feet. It shakes his head and looks up at its foe, who is glaring down at it. Realizing it has no chance at victory, the Berzurkir turns and hobbles away as fast as its injuries will allow.
Tortonne turns around and lets out a grunt as he sits back down, picking the quills out of his hands before going back to eating his tree.
