Just 45 minutes after departing from the ruins of Atlanta, the two MTAs and Thunder land at Imar. By now the sun has begun to set, giving everything an orange glow. Orion carries the still-unconscious Pavoroc out of the aircraft and to what has by now become the official medical hangar. Once there, the mech carefully lays the bird down, and several medics begin their work, with a pair of Adams present for heavy lifting.
Several hours pass, and by now it’s completely dark outside. Inside the medical hangar, which remains brightly lit from numerous powerful lights on the ceiling, Pavoroc is still being worked on. By now most of the blood has been cleaned off his feathers and the worst of his wounds have been closed.
Neil and Jason drive up in a Jeep. As they stop just outside the open hangar doors and get out, they see Kevin leaning up against the inner wall just inside the edge of the doors, arms crossed and watching intently as the medics continue their work.
“Have you been here this whole time?” asks Jason.
Kevin just keeps staring at the broken guardian.
Before Jason can ask again, one of the medics walks up to him and Neil.
“How’s it look?” asks Neil.
“Well... he seems stable, but frankly I don’t know if anything we’re doing is actually helping or not. Even if he seems pretty much like a normal organism from a physical standpoint, we’re not exactly trained in the medical care of magical beings.”
“Just keep doing the best you can.”
“Of course.”

-3 days later-
After well over 48 hours with no change in his status, Pavoroc finally begins showing signs of recovery. On the morning of the third day, he awakens. The massive bird rolls to his feet, knocking over equipment and making personnel scatter. He stands up, then reaches down with his beak and pulls out the hose-sized IV that had been inserted into his wing. One of the doctors runs over and pushes a button on the wall.
“He’s awake!”
Within moments, Jason and Neil are headed to the hangar in a Jeep. But before they even get close, they see the bird ascending into the sky. They continue on to the medical hangar, arriving a few minutes later. Suchodon and Theraga had been attracted by all the commotion and came to investigate as well.
“Report!” Neil commands as he hurriedly walks into the hangar, Jason not far behind. With all the doctors occupied with cleaning up the mess left by Pavoroc’s sudden awakening, no one answers. He’s just about to yell his order again when a calm voice comes from behind him.
“I’m not strong enough.”
Neil and Jason turn around. Kevin is leaning up against the wall in almost the exact same spot he was in when they came to the hangar shortly after the guardian was brought in days ago, arms crossed and staring out the hangar doors on the opposite end of the structure, seemingly completely unfazed by what had just transpired.
“What?” asks Jason.
“‘I couldn’t beat him. I’m not strong enough.’ That’s what he said before he left.”
A few moments of silence pass before Kevin steps away from the wall and starts to walk out the hangar doors. Before completely exiting, he stops and turns his head, albeit not far enough to fully look back at the two men.
“He’s probably gonna go train.”
With that, Kevin walks out the massive doorway and disappears around the other side of the wall. Jason turns to Neil.
“Is it just me, or has he been acting kinda weird since coming back from Atlanta?”

Several hours after Pavoroc left, Kevin is laying on the grass a hundred feet or so from the paved edge of the base, resting his head on his hands as he stares up at the midday sky. Suddenly, Stella’s face comes into his view from above as she leans over him.
“Boo!”
“Hey.”
She straightens back up and walks around next to him before plopping down on the grass as well. They lay like that in silence for a few moments, just staring up at the sky.
“You’ve been kinda... distant the last few days. What’s been bugging you? And don’t say nothing, because it’s definitely something.”
Kevin sighs. “It’s the whole situation with Atlanta. Pavoroc and that Shadow monster almost completely leveled the entire city in less than an hour. Not even Blaradon did that when we were fighting him, at least not until he blew up. And that final attack Pavoroc did... it was like a damn tactical nuke. We don’t have anything that can compete with that, and that creature survived it.”
“You fought a planet-destroying mech and came out on top. I’m sure you’ll be able to handle that thing if you end up fighting it.”
“I hope so.”
Stella sits up slightly, supporting herself on her elbows as she looks over at Kevin. “Hey, you’re not getting all emo and angsty on me, are you?”
Kevin cracks a slight smile. “Nah. Don’t wo-”
He’s cut off as a passing mechanic yells at them. “Hey lovebirds, why don’t you go to your quarters for some privacy!”
Without even looking at the man, both Kevin and Stella simultaneously and wordlessly shoot him the bird. They grew used to such teasing long ago. The man laughs and continues on his way.
“Anyway,” says Kevin, “Don’t worry about me, I’ll be fine.”
Stella chuckles a bit as she lays back down and turns her gaze skyward again. “I know.”
They continue to lay on the grass, watching the sparse clouds drift by for a while longer.
