“Sir!” yells one of the technicians in the main control room at Imar Science. “We’ve got 11 unknown sonar contacts inbound. They just entered Choctawhatchee Bay and are traveling at 40 knots.”
“Ready base defenses and deploy the MADROCs.” responds Neil.
A couple minutes later, several of the naval mines lining the mouth of the harbor detonate, sending columns of water with chunks of black material into the air.
“Five targets remaining.”
---
A dozen MADROCs slip into the harbor, emptying their torpedo tubes in the process. 72 detonations fill the harbor over the next few moments as the torpedoes pummel their targets. Another of the sonar signatures disappears.
“Remember guys, we’re supposed to try capturing a couple of these things alive if possible.” says the squadron leader.
“Yeah, yeah. Doesn’t mean we can’t beat the shit outta ‘em first though.” responds a second pilot.
The mechanized scorpions close in on the remaining four targets, splitting into groups of three. Once they get visuals on the injured creatures, three Ahuizotls and a Mamlambo, the mechs open fire with their beam cannons. The Ahuizotls, now thoroughly enraged by the attacks on them, launch themselves at the MADROCs. One of the apelike creatures manages to catch one of the mechs, but is quickly struck by harpoons fired by the other two and surged with electricity, allowing the captured mech to escape. After getting some distance between itself and the Ahuizotl, the third MADROC turns around and fires its own harpoon. Now with three harpoons surging electricity through its body, the creature’s resistance is significantly lessened as the three scorpion mechs begin to drag it toward the shore.
The three other groups are faring similarly well, and within ten minutes all twelve have made it onto the beach. Their quarry are still partially submerged, thrashing about in the shallow water. Slowly the mechs reel the four monsters closer to shore, ignoring the sudden rainstorm that’s popped up. When it finally gets close to the shore, the Mamlambo decides its had enough and stops trying to escape. It lashes out with its long neck, snatching one of the MADROCs in its jaws before slamming it to the ground. The other two immediately open fire on it with their beam cannons, making it release the damaged MADROC.
The three Ahuizotls have likewise become fed up and have launched attacks themselves. One MADROC goes flying through the closed doors of a nearby hangar, but gets up a few moments later relatively undamaged.
“Grah, dammit this isn’t gonna work! Abort capture operation and terminate targets!”
“Gladly!”
The MADROCs that still have their harpoons attached to the monsters sever the cables and go on full offensive, firing away at the injured monsters with their beam cannons. One Ahuizotl grabs a MADROC and tries to crush it, but the machine fights back with its bladed claws, leaving deep cuts that ooze black ichor. A second mech circles around behind the apelike creature and wraps its claws around the creature’s tail. A few moments later the tail flops to the ground, severed a third of the way down. The Ahuizotl screams in agony and drops the MADROC in its grasp, at which point the creature is promptly hamstrung by the third mech. The tendons in its legs severed, the creature collapses. The MADROC which was in its grip moments earlier blasts the creature point-blank in the face with its beam cannons before ramming the point of its claw blade through one of its eyes. It screams one last time before falling silent and dissolving into wisps of dark energy.
Meanwhile, a MADROC has climbed onto the Mamlambo’s back and wrapped its claws around its thin neck. Shortly thereafter, the dinosaur-like creature’s neck is severed and the rain dissipates. The second Ahuizotl meets a similar fate as the first a few seconds later. The final one refuses to go down, though, and two MADROCs lay crippled on the beach around it, while a third is in its grasp. The apelike monster roars and tears off one of the MADROC’s claws before trying to crush its cockpit. Suddenly, its entire upper torso explodes in a shower of gore and the MADROC falls to the ground. The Orion, fresh out of its simulated battle with Darktide, stands halfway across the base, the barrel of its Sniper Rifle smoking.
“Jesus Christ Kevin, you could have hit me!”
“Dude... Sniper Rifle.”
