A few minutes after leaving the meeting room, two jeeps roll up to one of the many hangars in Imar, this one being in an area of the base that hadn’t suffered much damage in the attack. Neil and General Williams get out of the first, and Jason, Ben, and Natalie get out of the second. The hangar’s massive main doors are closed, so the group enters through the nearest normal-sized one.
Once inside, they are met by the sight of a huge humanoid mecha laying on a platform. It’s obviously incomplete, with a large amount of its armor still missing. A couple dozen people are working furiously on it, with a pair of Adams for heavy lifting.
“The GMX-78-2 Orion.” says Neil. “We’ve been working on it for about six months, but since the attack we’ve focused everything on completing it. It’ll be ready for action by week’s end.”
“No offense, but it looks kinda... plain.” says Ben. “I mean, I don’t see any weapons or anything.”
“Oh, it’s got weapons.” comes a voice from behind the group, making them all turn around. “And it’d whoop your Riptide’s ass any day.”
“Ah, Kevin, there you are. Everyone, this is Kevin Anew, the Orion’s pilot.”
Ben walks over to Kevin, apparently not hearing Neil’s words. “What did you say, kid?”
“I take it you’re Ben Davidson.” says Kevin as he smirks and looks the taller man in the eyes.
“Yes I am, and I don’t think I quite heard what you said a second ago.”
Neil and General Williams simultaneously clear their throats to get the pilots’ attention before the situation escalates.
“Anyway, Kevin is onto something, though his wording could have been better. I wanted to ask you if you’d be up for having one of your machines face the Orion in a sparring match once its completed, to test its abilities.”
Ben glares at Kevin. “Oh, I’ll give him a test run.”
This time Natalie speaks up. “Actually, we’re working on upgrading Riptide. I think a practice match would be beneficial for both of us. Assuming it’s okay with the General, of course.”
“Yes, I agree.”
“Thank you, General. I won’t keep you any longer, I know you’re anxious to get back to your base.”
General Williams nods. “We’ll be in touch, Mr. Maxwell.”
The trio turns and heads toward the exit, walking past Kevin in the process. Ben and Kevin don’t take their eyes off each other, Kevin smirking the whole time. Neil and Jason leave shortly after, Jason giving Kevin a playful smack to the back of the head as he walks by. Once they leave, Kevin turns and looks up at the mech.
“Just a little while longer.”
