With his hunger sated and his energy replenished, Pavoroc has left the Lawless Zone, knowing his presence would be much more helpful elsewhere. He headed toward North America, specifically the United States, as he sensed the greatest amount of disturbance in that direction.
Now over the ocean, a dimensional rift suddenly opens in front of him. “What the-” He’s forced to bank and give a flap of his powerful wings, doing the aerial equivalent of a sidestep to avoid plowing into the rift. He slows down and begins to circle around, carefully watching the portal of darkness. After a few seconds, a huge, skeletal bird emerges from the rift and takes flight. The Shadow Roc immediately spots Pavoroc and veers toward him. The colorful avian nimbly dodges and then gives chase. After a few seconds, the Shadow Roc rolls over and dives for the water.
“Hmm, you’re pretty good.” Pavoroc says as he mirrors the other bird’s maneuver. “But not good enough ”
The two birds level out a hundred meters above the water. This time the Shadow Roc pulls up, still trying to shake Pavoroc from his tail. This proves to be a mistake. Being the more powerful, Pavoroc is able to climb faster and soon catches up to the skeletal bird, sinking his talons into its backside. The Shadow Roc quickly retaliates, slashing at him with its razor-sharp feathers. He lets go and flaps his wings to gain some distance, some severed pieces of the blue feathers on his chest falling away.
Before Pavoroc can retaliate, the Shadow Roc flaps its wings and launches several of its feathers at him. He manages to move out of the path of most of them, but a couple slice through the feathers on his right wing while another stabs into the wing itself. Pavoroc squawks in pain and pulls the feather out with his beak.
“You... will pay for that.”
Spreading his wings wide, Pavoroc fires his Rainbow Beam from his chest. It strikes the Shadow Roc and engulfs it in an explosion. The devil bird plummets from the sky, bones and feathers trailing smoke. Not bothering to watch it splash down, Pavoroc gives a huff and continues on his way.
A minute later, he senses something coming at him from behind. He rolls over and brandishes his talons. He’s shocked to see that his attacker is the Shadow Roc again. The skeletal raptor pulls up to avoid Pavoroc’s claws, and Pavoroc rolls back over and takes pursuit again. The Shadow Roc doesn’t play along, though, and quickly spins around, flinging several feathers at Pavoroc. The legendary bird just manages to avoid the attack, swooping underneath the feathers and passing under the Shadow Roc a moment later. The evil bird spins around again, launching another volley of feathers. Pavoroc counters by firing and equal number of electrical bolts from his wings, destroying the feathers before they can hit.
The two birds hover, staring at each other for a few moments. With a shriek, the Shadow Roc begins furiously flapping its wings, whipping up powerful winds in an attempt to knock its foe from the sky. Pavoroc responds in kind, and the two opposing wind storms clash in maelstrom of turbulence. The corners of his mouth, the only parts capable of flexing, turn upwards into a smirk.
“You’ll have to do better than that.”
The feathers on a large section of the Shadow Roc’s right wing are suddenly severed by an invisible blade. Another section on its left wing follows an instant later, then it’s knocked back slightly as one strikes its body. A fourth leaves its right wing with only partial feathers of varying lengths, and yet another strikes its left shoulder while a sixth leaves its left wing almost completely featherless. Unable to maintain lift any longer, the Shadow Roc plummets from the sky. This time Pavoroc watches to make sure his foe is finished off. Much to his frustration, the bird’s remaining wing feathers are shed and completely replaced within just a few seconds, allowing it to regain control and pull up before hitting the water.
“Why won’t you die!?”
Pavoroc tucks in his wings and dives at the Shadow Roc, and the two meet in a clash of talons and feathers. One of Pavoroc’s talons closes on the Shadow Roc’s chest, his claws digging into the darkness orb within its rib cage. The evil bird immediately shrieks and pulls away, slashing at him with its wings in the process.
“Aha! So that’s your weakness!”
The Shadow Roc launches more feathers at Pavoroc while continuing to distance itself from him, but he again destroys them with bolts of electricity. Before it can launch another volley, Pavoroc spreads his wings and train and an intensely bright flash of light emits from his body. By the time it fades, he’s already launched himself at the blinded Shadow Roc. He slams into the evil bird with tremendous force, gripping the darkness orb in its chest with both sets of talons. The skeletal bird screams in pain as the orb cracks.
“Now... BEGONE!”
With that, Pavoroc crushes the orb. Almost immediately, the Shadow Roc falls apart, its bones and feathers crumbling to dust before they even touch the water. Pavoroc hovers for a moment, then looks over at his injured wing. It burns like mad. He ignores the pain as best he can, and resumes his flight toward North America.
