King Basil was slithering through the swamp like some mythical lake serpent when he came upon a strange sight. The creature smelled like a bird, had feathers like a bird, and was beaked like a bird, yet walked on four legs. Hungry and driven by instinct to kill the avian, as most species with feathers were the enemies of young snakes, Basil hid the bulk of his body underwater and continued to observe the creature. It speared a large fish, swallowed it, and let out a victorious caw. That settled it - this was a bird, the enemy of Basil's kin. Therefore it was his duty to eliminate it from his territory.
With a furious hiss Basil revealed himself to the avian, spreading his hood in a horrific threat display. The bird was quickly mesmerized by the serpent's hood into blind terror, running around in circles and squawking with fear. Basil quickly struck it, injecting it with neurotoxin until its joints stiffened. The Hagu managed to caw weakly before falling into a limp pile in the marsh, allowing Basil to easily swallow it whole.
Basil sniffed the air and detected another presence in the area. With some searching he found the bird's nest, complete with several tasty eggs. With a certain smugness the serpent ate the bird's eggs, believing it to be a somewhat ironic end to their encounter. As the old bird ate the young serpents, so did the old serpent eat the young birds. All was right in Basil's world.
